Restoring Hope - A Mom's Second Chance

Woman in front of a femail judge. Smiling. Happy. Court.

Deidra stood in the courtroom, waiting for the judge to speak. Everyone in the room was focused on her daughters, even though they were not present.

Maddie and Mallory had serious special needs. They entered the foster care system after a heartbreaking tragedy and both needed extra support and specialized services. But at the time, their mother was overwhelmed with grief, battling addiction, and unable to step up in the way they needed.

A CASA volunteer, Kim, was assigned to the case shortly after the girls were removed. Her primary responsibilities were advocating for the girl’s best interests and making sure their unique needs were met.

Kim noticed right away that the girls needed stability. They also needed structure, a routine, and access to the right kind of support. Kim went out of her way to make sure they were given the evaluations and treatments they needed. Over time Maddie and Mallory began to thrive.

Kim also had faith in Deidra. She saw a mom who loved her kids and wanted a second chance. She encouraged Deidra to get treatment for her addiction and supported her in her recovery. With Kim’s encouragement, Deidra enrolled in a second parenting class to strengthen her skills. She put in the work and proved she was serious about getting her daughters back.

The Deidra that stood before the judge at that final court hearing  was different. She was stronger, more open-minded and full of hope. Kim sat proudly nearby as the judge made it official: Maddie and Mallory were going home. The judge’s decision marked a new chapter for the family.

Stories like this one remind us why CASA volunteers matter so much. One person can change everything. With compassion and advocacy, we can help rewrite family stories.
