May is National Foster Care Month, a time to raise awareness about the challenges children in the foster care system face and to celebrate the dedicated individuals who work tirelessly to support them. One such group of unsung heroes are Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers, who play a crucial role in advocating for the best interests of children in our communities.

Children in foster care face a multitude of challenges, from instability and trauma to navigating the complexities of the legal system. CASA volunteers serve as a consistent presence in a child's life, providing them with much-needed support, guidance, and advocacy. By getting to know the child and their unique needs, CASA volunteers can make informed recommendations to the court about what is in the child's best interests. With a CASA volunteer by their side, children in foster care are more likely to find a safe, permanent home and less likely to linger in long-term foster care or re-enter the system.

During National Foster Care Month, there are numerous ways communities can get involved and support the mission of CASA. Here are a few ideas to consider:

Host Informational Events

Organize events that offer insight into the foster care system and the role of CASA volunteers. These events can provide valuable information to prospective volunteers and encourage community members to get involved.

Spread Awareness on Social Media

Follow CASA for Children on Facebook or Instagram and help us share our stories of successful foster care outcomes and the significant impact of CASA volunteers. Encouraging others to share these posts can amplify the message and inspire more people to support the cause.

Fundraising for CASA Programs

Fundraisers are vital for our program as we rely on donations to train and support volunteers. Consider organizing a local fundraiser, such as a charity run or an auction, to contribute to and assist us in our advocacy efforts.

Whether by becoming a CASA volunteer, supporting fundraising efforts or simply spreading the word, we all have the power to make a difference.
