CULTURAL CONSIDERATIONS: GUIDE FOR LGBTQ+ STUDENTS

In everything we do, CASA is committed to protecting the best interests of all children - and the reality is that disproportionality high number of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) children and youth are in the child welfare system, many having been abandoned by their families due to their LGBTQ identity

CASA can help ensure these children are safe and able to embrace every aspect of their identity while in care. We envision a safe, positive future for all area children - and we hope you will join us in making this vision a reality by continuing to educate ourselves on how to best advocate for and work with LGBTQ youth and families.

Maryville University has developed an online Guide for LGBTQ+ Students that contains a wide variety of resources covering:

  • Anti-bullying and creating safe schools,
  • Sexual assault/discrimination,
  • How to find LGBTQ-supportive providers,
  • How to be a good ally, and much more.

Don't forget to complete your continuing education credit report for each training you complete. This will help to ensure that you are receiving credit for any training hours completed and that those hours are applied to your 12 hours per year requirement.

CASA for Children is committed to our goal of ensuring the highest quality advocacy possible for all children in the child protection system, regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, expression, or disability status – that’s why we are now highlighting resources to support the CASA network’s journey to becoming more inclusive, welcoming, affirming and culturally considerate. Explore more Cultural Considerations articles.
