SESAME STREET CHILD-FOCUSED RESOURCES ON PARENTAL ADDICTION
 

Currently, in the United States, more than 5.7 million children under the age of 11 are living in households with a parent who struggles with substance abuse. This number does not account for the countless children who are not living with a parent, due to things like separation, divorce, incarceration, or death as a result of parental substance use.

To help children and families build resilience, hope, and optimism in the face of this challenge, Sesame Street has created multimedia resources discussing parental addiction that focuses on teaching coping strategies, offering age-appropriate explanations and helping children talk about their feelings. 

Karli, a Sesame Street character, has a unique storyline that began the Sesame Street in communities foster care initiative. Karli's storyline has expanded to include the reason she was placed in foster care: her mother had to go away for treatment, but now she is in recovery. This new storyline allows for a deeper and productive discussion around an issue many children face every day. 

We hope that you will utilize these resources to help facilitate discussion about the difficult topic of parental addiction.

Remember to complete your continuing education credit report for each training you complete. This will help to ensure that you are receiving credit for any training hours completed and that those hours are applied to your required 12 hours per year of in-service training.
